ChatGPT on WhatsApp for Business: Build It (n8n) or Use a Platform? — Chatmizer guide

The short answer

You can put ChatGPT on WhatsApp for your business yourself: connect the WhatsApp Cloud API to an n8n workflow that sends each message to OpenAI and posts the reply back. A demo takes a day. The hard part is what comes after: templates outside the 24-hour window, handing chats to staff, a team inbox, voice notes, Arabic dialects and keeping it running. A ready platform trades some control for all of that.

Search for ChatGPT on WhatsApp and you will find dozens of tutorials that end with a bot answering “hello” on a test number. They are real and they work. This guide is for the owner or freelancer deciding whether to run a business on one: what the build needs, what the tutorials leave out, what it costs every month, and when paying for a platform is the cheaper choice once your time is counted.

Is ChatGPT on WhatsApp allowed in 2026?

Yes, for a business bot. Since 15 January 2026, WhatsApp's Business Solution Terms forbid AI providers from using the platform when AI is the primary functionality being offered, rather than incidental or ancillary. That rule ended general-purpose assistants on WhatsApp numbers, as TechCrunch reported when the terms changed. A bot that uses an OpenAI model to answer questions about your own menu, prices, bookings and orders is the incidental use that stays allowed. A number that offers “ask our AI anything” is not. Our WhatsApp AI chatbot policy 2026 guide covers the rule in detail.

What a DIY ChatGPT WhatsApp bot needs

  1. 1A Meta app and a WhatsApp Business account. Create an app in Meta's developer dashboard, add WhatsApp, and attach it to your business portfolio. Business verification raises your limits later.
  2. 2A phone number for the API. It must not be active in the regular WhatsApp app at the same time unless your setup supports Meta's coexistence option.
  3. 3A permanent access token. The test token expires within a day; production needs a system-user token stored safely.
  4. 4A public HTTPS webhook. n8n's WhatsApp trigger needs a URL Meta can reach: n8n Cloud, or self-hosted n8n with a domain and an SSL certificate.
  5. 5The AI step. An OpenAI credential, a system prompt with your prices and policies, and memory keyed to each customer's number so the bot remembers the conversation.
  6. 6The reply step and a payment method. Send the answer back through the WhatsApp node, and add a payment method to the WhatsApp account for the fees Meta charges.

What the tutorials leave out

  • The 24-hour window. After 24 hours without a message from the customer you can only send an approved template. A follow-up, an order update or a reminder needs templates, approval and logic to choose between them. Our 24-hour window guide explains the rule.
  • Handing over to a person. The bot has to stop answering when a staff member takes over, and start again later. Without that, customers get two answers.
  • A team inbox. Once the number is on the API, your staff can't reply from their phones. Someone needs a screen to read and answer chats, with notes and assignment.
  • Voice notes and photos. WhatsApp sends media as an ID you must download with your token, then transcribe or analyse before the model sees it. Many customers in Egypt and the Gulf send voice notes first.
  • Arabic dialects. A model may answer Egyptian Arabic in stiff formal Arabic, or switch languages mid-chat. Prompting and testing take time.
  • Duplicates and failures. Meta retries webhooks, so the same message can arrive twice and get two replies. Tokens expire, nodes fail at night, and nobody notices until a customer complains.
  • Made-up answers. Without a knowledge base and clear rules, the model will guess a price or a delivery time. See how to train an AI chatbot on your website for the principles.

What it costs to run each month

  • n8n. Self-hosted community edition is free software, but the server, domain and backups are yours. n8n Cloud Starter was listed at €20 a month billed yearly (€24 monthly) for 2,500 executions when checked in October 2026. Each incoming message usually triggers at least one execution, so 2,500 a month is a small shop's volume, not a busy restaurant's.
  • OpenAI usage. Billed per token, and it grows with long conversations, long system prompts and voice transcription.
  • Meta's fees. Since 1 October 2026, replies inside the 24-hour window are free for the first 1,000 per number per month and then charged at the market's utility rate; templates are charged per delivered message by country and category; conversations that start from a Click-to-WhatsApp ad or a Page button are free for 72 hours. You pay these whatever you choose.
  • Your time. Updating prices, fixing broken flows and answering “the bot said something strange” is the cost most builders forget.

When building it yourself is the right call

  • You or someone on the team is comfortable with APIs, webhooks and debugging.
  • The bot does one narrow job, such as order status from your own system, and a team inbox is not needed.
  • You need a specific model, your own data pipeline or a custom integration no platform offers.
  • You treat it as a product with an owner, monitoring and time set aside every month.

When a platform is the better buy

  • Several people answer customers and need to see the same conversations.
  • Customers send voice notes, photos and Egyptian or Gulf Arabic, and you need it to work on day one.
  • You take bookings or orders in chat and need them on a calendar or a board, not in a chat log.
  • Nobody on the team wants to be on call for a webhook.

Chatmizer is one of those platforms. It is not ChatGPT: it runs on Google's Gemini models. Its AI agent learns from your website, PDFs and menu photos, answers in Arabic, Egyptian Arabic and English, understands voice notes and photos, and hands the chat to a person in a shared inbox. Bookings and orders are built in. It has limits too: you get less control over the model than with your own build, and the number must not be active in the WhatsApp app. For the handover part in detail, read our guide to chatbot human handoff.

Frequently asked questions

How do I connect ChatGPT to my WhatsApp Business number?

Move the number to the WhatsApp Cloud API through a Meta app, create a permanent token, point the webhook at an automation tool such as n8n, send each message to OpenAI with your business instructions, and post the answer back with the WhatsApp send-message call.

Is it free to build a WhatsApp AI agent with n8n?

The software can be free if you self-host n8n, but you still pay for a server, OpenAI usage and Meta's WhatsApp fees. Replies are no longer simply free: since October 2026 only the first 1,000 service replies per number each month are.

Will Meta ban my ChatGPT bot on WhatsApp?

Not for answering questions about your own business. Since 15 January 2026 WhatsApp forbids general-purpose AI assistants as the main thing a number offers. Keep the bot to your products, bookings and orders.

Can I keep using WhatsApp on my phone with the bot?

With a standard Cloud API setup the number leaves the phone app. Meta offers a coexistence option, but only some providers support it; Chatmizer does not today and needs a number that is not active in the WhatsApp app.

Can a ChatGPT WhatsApp bot understand voice notes?

Only if you build it: download the audio from Meta with your token, transcribe it, then pass the text to the model. Test it with the dialect your customers actually speak.

Should I build with n8n or pay for a platform?

Build if you have the skills, a narrow use case and time to maintain it. Buy if several people answer chats, you need handoff, voice notes, Arabic, bookings or orders, or nobody wants to fix a webhook at night.
