Click-to-WhatsApp Ads: Auto-Reply, Qualify and Close Every Lead
Make click-to-WhatsApp ads pay: reply in seconds, qualify with two questions, book or sell in the chat, and use the free 72-hour window before it closes.

The short answer
Click-to-WhatsApp ads open a chat with your business instead of a website. To turn those chats into sales, reply automatically within seconds, answer what the ad promised, ask two or three qualifying questions, then book or take the order in the same chat. If you reply within 24 hours, Meta makes every message to that person free for 72 hours.
With click-to-WhatsApp ads you pay for a conversation, not a page view. The person taps your ad on Facebook or Instagram, WhatsApp opens with a message already typed, and they press send. At that moment they are interested, holding their phone, and waiting for you. Everything that happens in the next few minutes decides whether you paid for a customer or for a chat nobody answered. This guide shows how to set up the reply, the qualifying questions and the hand-off so every ad lead gets the same fast, useful answer, day or night.
How click-to-WhatsApp ads work
- You create the ad in Meta Ads Manager with the Messages objective and WhatsApp as the destination. The WhatsApp number must be connected to your Facebook Page.
- In the ad you write a pre-filled message, the text that appears in the customer's WhatsApp when it opens, such as “Hi, I'd like the price of the summer package.”
- The customer sends it, and the chat lands in your WhatsApp like any other message.
- The same kind of chat can also start from the WhatsApp button on your Facebook Page.
The free 72-hour window
Meta calls these chats free entry point conversations. If you reply within 24 hours of the customer's first message, a 72-hour window opens in which every message you send that person is free, including templates and marketing messages. The chat has to start in the WhatsApp app on a phone; chats opened from WhatsApp Web or desktop don't qualify. This window still applies after the October 2026 change, when replies outside it started to cost money beyond 1,000 a month per number (see WhatsApp Business API pricing).
One thing the 72 hours do not change: the 24-hour messaging window. Once 24 hours pass since the customer's last message, you still need an approved template to write first. It is simply free until the 72 hours end. That makes the window the best time for one well-timed follow-up.
Why ad leads go cold
- Slow first reply. The customer tapped five ads that evening. The business that answers first, with a real answer, gets the conversation.
- A generic greeting. “Hello, how can we help?” makes them repeat what the pre-filled message already said.
- Questions before value. Asking for a full name and email before saying the price feels like a form, and they leave.
- Sending them to a website. They chose WhatsApp to avoid a form. A link to one is a step backwards.
- Nobody on duty at night. Ads run all evening; your team does not.
Set up the auto-reply for click-to-WhatsApp ads
- 1Write a different pre-filled message for each ad. Use a phrase that says which offer it is: “summer package”, “free consultation”, “2-bedroom units”. It tells you, and your automation, what this person wants before anyone reads the chat.
- 2Choose who answers. In Chatmizer you can build a flow whose trigger is a keyword from that pre-filled message, so each ad gets its own path, or let your AI agent answer every new chat from what it knows about your business. Many businesses combine both: a flow for the ad's offer, the AI agent for everything else.
- 3Answer the ad's promise first. The first reply gives the price, what is included and one clear next step, in a few lines. Then ask one question.
- 4Qualify with two or three questions. Use buttons where you can (a Guided Menu or Ask a Question block): area, budget, preferred date, size. Save each answer on the contact and add a tag naming the ad, so you can find these leads later.
- 5Finish in the chat. For services, offer real free times with the Book Appointment block from Booking Zone. For products, let the agent take the order, even from a voice note, with the order-taking chatbot.
- 6Hand hot leads to a person. A Human Takeover step sends the chat to your team with the answers already collected, so nobody asks the same questions twice.
- 7Follow up once inside the 72 hours. If they went quiet, one helpful message (“Still interested? Saturday 4 pm is free”) sent while the window is open costs nothing. Enroll them in a follow-up rather than relying on someone remembering.
First replies that work, by business type
| Ad offer | First reply covers | Qualifying questions | How it ends |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clinic: free consultation | What the consultation includes, how long it takes | Which service? Which branch? | Booked into a real free slot |
| Restaurant: weekend offer | The offer, its price, delivery areas | Delivery or pickup? Which area? | Order card on the order board |
| Real estate: new project | Starting price, location, unit sizes | Budget range? Cash or instalments? When? | Visit booked or lead assigned to an agent |
| Training centre: new course | Dates, price, level | Your level? Weekday or weekend group? | Seat booked or sent to the admissions team |
| Online store: product ad | Price, sizes or colours in stock, delivery time | Which size? Which city? | Order taken, payment link or cash on delivery |
Customer: “Hi, I'd like the price of the summer package.” Reply: “Hi! The summer package is 3 sessions with a free skin check. Would you like to book at the Nasr City or the Maadi branch?” [two buttons]
Mistakes that waste click-to-WhatsApp ad budget
- One pre-filled message for every ad, so every lead gets the same generic reply.
- Treating ad leads as marketing contacts. A reply to their question is fine; adding them to future offer broadcasts needs their opt-in.
- Letting the 72 hours pass without the one follow-up that would have been free.
- No hand-off: the bot keeps asking questions when the customer has typed “I want to talk to someone”.
- Judging ads only by cost per conversation. Count how many conversations became bookings or orders.
Measuring what each ad brings
Ads Manager reports how many conversations each ad started and what each one cost. Chatmizer does not import ad reports, so the honest way to connect the two is the pre-filled message: when each ad starts with its own keyword, the flow tags the contact with that ad's name, and you can count tagged contacts who booked or ordered. It is simple, and it is enough to see which offer brings buyers and which brings browsers. For deeper lead handling, read how to qualify leads from social media.
Answer every ad lead in seconds, then book or take the order in the same WhatsApp chat.

How do I automatically reply to people who message from my click-to-WhatsApp ad?
Connect your WhatsApp number to a tool on the official WhatsApp Business Platform, then either build a flow triggered by a keyword from the ad's pre-filled message or let an AI agent answer every new chat. The reply goes out within seconds, at any hour.
Is everything free for 72 hours after a click-to-WhatsApp ad?
Yes, if you reply within 24 hours of the customer's first message and the chat started in the WhatsApp mobile app. For 72 hours every message to that person is free, templates included. The 24-hour rule for free-form messages still applies inside that time.
Do I need the WhatsApp Business API to run click-to-WhatsApp ads?
No, the ads also work with the WhatsApp Business app. But automatic replies, AI answers, several teammates on one number and the free entry-point pricing belong to the WhatsApp Business Platform.
Can I see which ad each WhatsApp lead came from?
Ads Manager shows conversations and cost per ad. Chatmizer does not import ad reports; give each ad its own pre-filled message and let a keyword flow tag the contact with the ad's name, so you can count bookings and orders per ad.
Can I send offers to ad leads later?
Only to people who agreed to receive marketing messages. After the free window, a marketing template is charged at Meta's rate for the customer's country.
Should a bot or a person answer ad leads?
Both. Let automation send the first answer and ask the qualifying questions instantly, then hand serious buyers and anything unusual to a person with the answers already collected.
