How to Auto-Reply to Facebook Comments with a Private Message — Chatmizer guide

The short answer

To auto-reply to Facebook comments with a private message, connect your Page to a tool that uses Meta's Private Replies: when a comment contains your keyword, the tool sends that person one Messenger message. Meta allows a single private reply per comment, within 7 days of the comment, and the conversation continues only after the person answers.

Post a product on a Facebook Page in Egypt and the comments fill with the same words: “price?”, “bekam?”, “details please”, “how much for delivery to Giza?”. Answering each one by hand takes hours, and answering the price publicly invites competitors to undercut you. Sending each commenter a private message automatically solves both. If your audience is mainly on Instagram, read our guide to auto-replying to Instagram comments with a DM instead; this one is about Facebook Pages, posts and ads.

How Facebook's private reply rule works

  • One message per comment. Meta's Private Replies feature lets a Page send a single message in reply to a comment. You cannot send a second one until the person answers.
  • Within 7 days. The private reply must go out within seven days of the comment. Old comments on last month's post can't get one.
  • It links back to the comment. The person sees which comment the message refers to, so it doesn't feel like spam from nowhere.
  • The chat opens when they answer. Once the person replies in Messenger, the normal 24-hour window starts and you can continue the conversation, by a person, a flow or an AI agent.
  • It works on Page posts and on comments on your ads, as Meta's documentation and tools built on it describe. Always test on the live ad before you raise the budget.

These rules come from Meta's Messenger Platform, so every tool that sends Facebook private replies follows them. A tool that promises several private messages to a commenter who has not answered is breaking Meta's rules, and that puts your Page at risk.

Set up auto-reply to Facebook comments step by step

  1. 1Connect your Facebook Page to a tool that supports private replies. In Chatmizer that is Channels, then Facebook.
  2. 2Publish what will talk to people in Messenger first: a flow with your price list and order steps, or an AI agent that knows your products.
  3. 3Create the comment rule. In Chatmizer open Comments to DMs, choose one post or all posts, add your keywords, and write the private message.
  4. 4Add a short public reply so other readers see you answered: “Sent you the details in Messenger.”
  5. 5Test from a personal account, not as the Page. Comments posted as the Page itself are ignored. Comment the keyword and check that the message arrives and the flow continues when you answer.
  6. 6Check the first day's comments for words people used that you didn't list, and add them.

Keywords and messages that work for pages in Egypt

What the commenter wantsKeywords to includePrivate message that works
The priceprice, how much, bekam, kam, el se3r, and the Arabic spellings“Hi! This dress is 650 EGP, sizes S to XL. Which size and colour would you like?”
Details or photosdetails, info, tafaseel, more photos“Here are the details and more photos. Do you want to order or ask about delivery?”
Deliverydelivery, shipping, tawseel, and city names“We deliver to all governorates. Send your area and we'll tell you the fee and time.”
Availabilityavailable, in stock, mawgood, size names“Tell me the size and colour and I'll check it for you right now.”

Two habits make the difference. First, include the variants people really type, including transliterated Arabic like “bekam” and common misspellings. Second, end every private message with a question. Meta gives you one message; a question is what turns it into a conversation, and the conversation is what opens the 24-hour window.

Comments on Facebook ads

Ad comments are where this pays most, because every comment cost you money to get. Set your rule to cover all posts, or the exact post the ad promotes, and comment the keyword on the live ad from a personal account before raising the budget. When the person replies, qualify them in the chat: what they want, which area, when they want it. Our guide to qualifying leads from social media covers the questions that separate buyers from browsers.

Mistakes that waste the one private reply

  • A message with only a link. People don't tap unknown links in a DM. Give the answer first, then the link if needed.
  • No question at the end. Without a reply from them, you can't send anything else.
  • Keywords that are too broad. “Hi” or “good” will DM people who were only being polite, and some will report it.
  • Answering a complaint with a sales message. An angry comment that happens to contain “price” should go to a person, not a price list. Read what your rule catches in the first week.
  • Different prices in public and in private. Keep one price list behind both, or customers notice.
  • Switching rules on for posts older than a week and expecting old commenters to get a message. Meta's 7-day limit blocks it.

Facebook, Instagram and TikTok compared

Facebook and Instagram both allow a private reply to a comment, so the same rule can cover both from one inbox. TikTok does not let a business send the first DM to someone who only commented, so on TikTok Chatmizer replies to the comment in public and invites the person to message you. For the wider Messenger setup, including the 24-hour window, see our guide to the Facebook Messenger chatbot for business.

Chatmizer sends an automatic private reply to keyword comments on Facebook and Instagram, then lets your AI agent or a flow continue the chat.

Frequently asked questions

How do I automatically send a private message to people who comment on my Facebook post?

Connect your Page to a tool that supports Meta's Private Replies, create a rule with the keywords to watch and the message to send, and test it from a personal account. Each matching comment gets one Messenger message.

Can I send more than one private message to a commenter?

No. Meta allows one private reply per comment. You can message again only after the person answers, and then inside the 24-hour window.

How long after a comment can I send a private reply?

Up to 7 days after the comment, according to Meta's Messenger Platform rules. After that, the comment can only get a public reply.

Does auto-reply work on Facebook ad comments?

Meta's private replies cover comments on ads as well as posts. Point your rule at all posts or at the post behind the ad, and test with a real comment on the live ad before you increase spend.

Why didn't the commenter get my private message?

The usual reasons: the comment was older than 7 days, a private reply was already sent for it, the wording didn't match your keywords, the comment was posted as the Page itself, or the Page connection needs to be renewed.

Can I do the same on TikTok?

Not as a private message. TikTok doesn't allow a business to DM someone who only commented, so the reply has to be public and invite them to message you first.
