The short answer
Instagram ice breakers are up to four tappable questions shown to someone opening a chat with your business for the first time, before they type anything. Meta caps them at four, shows them on mobile only, and removes them once the person has messaged you. Pick the four questions that start most of your sales, and make sure each tap gets an instant, useful answer.
The hardest message in any sale is the first one. A visitor opens your DMs, sees an empty chat, and leaves rather than think of what to type. Ice breakers remove that blank page: four ready questions sitting where the keyboard would be. One tap and they've started a conversation you can win.
What Instagram ice breakers are (and their real limits)
Meta's documentation is precise about how they behave, and most guides skip it:
- Four questions at most. Not five, not ten.
- Mobile only. People messaging you from a desktop browser won't see them.
- First contact only. Once someone has messaged you, the questions stop appearing for them.
- One list per language is possible through the API, with a default list required. People see the list matching their app language.
- A tap sends the question into the chat, as if the customer had typed it.
Ice breakers are different from the persistent menu, which stays available inside the chat (up to five items, with titles cut at 30 characters), and different from saved replies, which are shortcuts for you, not your customer.
How to set up Instagram ice breakers
- 1Make sure your account is professional (business or creator).
- 2In the app, look under your business or creator tools for Frequently asked questions. Menu names move between versions, so search settings for "FAQ" if you can't see it.
- 3Add up to four questions, written the way a customer would ask them.
- 4Decide what answers each one: Instagram's own automatic reply, or the tool that runs your inbox.
- 5Open your profile from a second account that has never messaged you, and test every tap on a phone.
Writing ice breakers that start sales, not chats
Look at your last 50 first messages. The four ice breakers should be the four questions that most often come right before a purchase or booking, phrased in the customer's words. "How much is delivery to my area?" beats "Shipping information". A question is a promise: whatever it asks, the answer must arrive at once and be complete enough to act on.
| Business | Four ice breakers that tend to convert |
|---|---|
| Clothing shop | Is it available in my size? · How much is delivery? · How do I order? · Can I return it? |
| Restaurant | Show me the menu · Do you deliver to me? · How long does delivery take? · Can I book a table? |
| Clinic | Book an appointment · How much is a consultation? · Where are you? · What are your hours? |
| Salon | Book an appointment · Prices for hair and nails · Who is available today? · Where are you? |
| Online course | What's in the course? · How much is it? · When does it start? · Can I pay in installments? |
What should happen after someone taps an ice breaker
The tap is where most setups fail. A canned paragraph answers the question but ends the conversation. A good reply answers and then moves one step forward: the size question gets the size chart and "Which size do you usually wear?"; the delivery question gets the fee and "What's your area?". That second line is where a sale begins.
- Answer completely in the first message. No "let me check" for a question you chose yourself.
- End with one question back, not a menu of five options.
- Hand over cleanly. If the customer asks something your answers don't cover, a person should pick it up quickly. See chatbot human handoff.
In Chatmizer, an AI agent trained on your prices, sizes and policies answers whatever the customer taps or types, in their language, and asks the next question that leads to an order or a booking.

- Questions about you instead of them: "Our story" and "Our values" get taps and no sales.
- A question with no real answer: "Do you have discounts?" when you never do.
- Setting them once and forgetting them: change them when your season, offer or best seller changes.
- Answering from two systems at once, which produces duplicate replies.

Frequently asked questions
How many ice breakers can I add on Instagram?
Four at most. Meta's API rejects a fifth, and the app's FAQ setting follows the same limit.
Why can't customers see my Instagram ice breakers?
They only appear on mobile, only to people who haven't messaged you before, and only if your account is professional. Test from a second account that has never written to you.
Are ice breakers the same as Instagram quick replies?
No. Ice breakers are questions your customer taps before their first message. Saved (quick) replies are shortcuts you use to type answers faster.
Can ice breakers be in Arabic and English?
Yes. Through the API you can set one list per language with a default list, and each person sees the list for their app language.
