Instagram Messages Not Sending? A Business Account Checklist
Instagram messages not sending or not arriving? A checklist for business accounts, from outages and blocks to Hidden Words and the setting tools need.

The short answer
When you find Instagram messages not sending or not arriving, check in this order: an Instagram outage, the app versus the website, Account Status for a messaging block, whether the person blocked or restricted you, Requests and Hidden Requests, your message controls, and, if you use an inbox tool, the Allow access to messages setting under Connected tools. Most cases end at one of these seven steps.
A personal account with a stuck message is an annoyance. A business account with stuck messages is lost revenue that nobody notices, because the customer simply goes somewhere else. The checklist below is ordered by how often each cause is the culprit, so start at the top and stop when you find it.
Step 1: rule out an outage
Before changing any settings, check whether Instagram itself is having problems: Instagram's own status updates, and outage trackers where users report problems in real time. If messaging is down for everyone, every setting change you make now will only confuse the picture later.
Step 2: test the app against the website
Send the same message from instagram.com on a computer. If it works on the web but not in the app, the problem is local: update the app, clear its cache (Android) or reinstall it (iPhone), and log out and back in. If it fails on the web too, the problem is your account, and the next steps matter.
Step 3: check Account Status for a messaging block
Open Settings, then Account Status. Instagram shows restrictions there, including temporary limits on messaging after too many messages in a short time. If you see one, stop sending. Messaging through a block extends it. Read the Instagram DM limit to understand what triggered it.
Step 4: has the person blocked or restricted you?
- Blocked: your messages show as sent but never arrive, and their profile may look empty to you.
- Restricted: your messages go to their requests, and they won't see you're online or when they've read it.
- Their message controls: some people only accept messages from accounts they follow.
Step 5: messages arriving but invisible to you
Often the message isn't failing at all; it's landing where you don't look. Messages from people who don't follow you go to Requests, and anything flagged as spam, or matching your Hidden Words, goes to Hidden Requests, with no notification. This is the most common cause of "customers say they messaged us and we never saw it". The full guide is Instagram message requests.
Step 6: check your message controls
In Settings, under Messages and story replies, your message controls decide who can message you directly, who lands in requests, and who can't reach you at all. Business accounts sometimes tighten these during a spam wave and forget, which quietly sends new customers to requests or blocks them outright.
Step 7: Instagram messages not sending through an inbox tool
If you answer from Meta Business Suite or another inbox, one switch decides everything. Instagram's help center: go to Settings, Messages and story replies, Message controls, and under Connected tools turn on Allow access to messages. With it off, connected tools can't read or send your DMs, even though the app works perfectly.
- Replies fail after a day: the 24-hour window has closed. See the 24-hour messaging window explained.
- Old requests missing in the tool: Meta's developer docs say requests inactive for 30 days aren't returned to connected tools.
- Media or links rejected: very large files and links Instagram flags can fail to send while plain text works.
- The account was reconnected: after a password change or new admin, reconnect the account in the tool so its access refreshes.
Chatmizer connects through Meta's official API and shows every Instagram DM in one live inbox, so you know a message arrived the moment it does, and an AI agent answers inside the window while your team handles the rest.

- 1Note the exact time, recipient and any error text.
- 2Use Report a problem in the app (shake your phone or go to Settings, then Help).
- 3If your account is restricted, follow the steps shown in Account Status, not third-party "unlock" services.
- 4Meanwhile, give customers a second channel, such as a WhatsApp link in your bio, so sales don't stop. See how to link WhatsApp to Instagram.
Frequently asked questions
Why are my Instagram messages not sending?
The usual causes are an outage, an app problem (test on the website), a temporary messaging block shown in Account Status, the recipient blocking or restricting you, or their message controls. Work through them in that order.
Why didn't I receive a customer's Instagram message?
It most likely landed in Requests or Hidden Requests, which don't notify you. Check both, and remove business words like "price" from your Hidden Words list.
Why can't Meta Business Suite or my inbox tool see Instagram DMs?
Turn on Allow access to messages: Settings, Messages and story replies, Message controls, Connected tools. Without it, no connected tool can read or send your DMs.
How long does an Instagram messaging restriction last?
Temporary blocks usually last 24 to 48 hours. Stop sending until it lifts, and check Account Status for the exact details.
