Meta Business Agent vs a Chatbot Platform: Do You Still Need One?

In June 2026 Meta announced Meta Business Agent, an AI that replies to your customers inside WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram. Since then, owners who pay for a chatbot tool, or were about to, ask the same thing: if Meta gives me an AI agent inside the apps I already use, why would I pay anyone else? Sometimes the honest answer is that you shouldn't. This article sets out what Meta's agent does according to Meta, what it costs, and the specific situations where a separate platform is still worth it.

What Meta Business Agent does today

Going only by Meta's own announcements (Meta's newsroom and the WhatsApp Business blog, checked October 2026), the agent:

• Answers questions about your business from the information, FAQs, website and files you give it, in your customers' local language and in a tone you set.
• Recommends products from your catalog and, in Meta's words, helps close sales.
• Books appointments and qualifies incoming leads.
• Lets you decide which topics it must pass to you, and you can step into any chat yourself.
• Runs in the WhatsApp Business app, Instagram, Messenger and Meta Business Suite, and can send you a morning summary of the chats you missed.

For larger businesses, Meta also opened a developer platform where the agent can call your own systems, for example to make a booking in software you already use (Meta for Developers).

What Meta Business Agent costs in 2026

• In the apps: switching the agent on is free, and it answers for free up to a monthly allowance.
• Meta One plans (launched 15 September 2026) add more agent replies at each level. Meta lists them as starting at US$14.99 a month (Essential), US$49.99 (Advanced), US$149 (Expert) and US$499 (Max); check the price shown for your country.
• On the WhatsApp Business Platform (API): since 1 August 2026 Meta bills Business Agent messages by tokens, one global rate of US$2 per million tokens. Meta's own estimate is 20,000 to 25,000 tokens for a typical message, roughly 4 to 5 US cents each (Meta's pricing page).

When Meta Business Agent is enough on its own

• You answer customers yourself from the WhatsApp Business app on your phone and want help at night.
• All your customers write on WhatsApp, Instagram or Messenger, and nowhere else.
• Most questions are about products already in your Meta catalog, prices and opening hours.
• One person handles the chats the AI passes on.

What a chatbot platform adds next to Meta Business Agent

The comparison below describes Meta's agent only as Meta presents it (October 2026). Where Meta's pages do not say, the cell says “check”: test it in your own account rather than trusting any vendor's claim, ours included.

The catch: one WhatsApp number can only live in one place

Meta's agent in the WhatsApp Business app works on the number that is active in that app. Chatmizer connects through the official WhatsApp Business Platform and today needs a number that is not active in the WhatsApp app, so the same number cannot run both. Many businesses split it: Meta's agent on the app number they have always used, and a platform on a dedicated number for ads, orders or bookings. Either way, never let two different AIs answer the same chats; customers get two answers and trust neither.

How to decide in fifteen minutes

1. 1List your channels from last month. If more than a handful of customers wrote on TikTok, Telegram, X or Reddit, a Meta-only agent leaves them unanswered.
2. 2Count the people who answer chats. One owner and one phone is a different job from three people who must not reply to the same customer twice.
3. 3Write down what happens after the answer. If a chat must end as a booking in a calendar or an order your kitchen or courier sees, test that exact path end to end.
4. 4Test Meta's agent with twenty real questions copied from your chats, in the words and dialect your customers use, including a voice note and a photo of a product.
