WhatsApp OTP vs SMS: Which Verification Code Is Better?
WhatsApp OTP vs SMS for sign-up and login codes: delivery, cost per country, trust, fraud and setup, and when to keep SMS as a fallback.

The short answer
In the WhatsApp OTP vs SMS choice, WhatsApp usually wins where your customers already use WhatsApp: the code comes from your verified business number with a Copy code button, Meta prices it per country, and it is not exposed to SMS pumping fraud. Keep SMS or email as a fallback for people without WhatsApp.
Every sign-up, login and password reset on your website ends with the same small step: send a one-time code to the customer's phone. For years that meant SMS. Today many businesses send the code on WhatsApp instead. This guide compares the two honestly, so you can decide which one your customers should get, and how to keep the other as a backup.
WhatsApp OTP vs SMS at a glance
| SMS code | WhatsApp code | |
|---|---|---|
| Who it comes from | A short code or a random sender | Your business name and number on WhatsApp |
| How it is copied | Phones may offer it from the keyboard | A Copy code button in the message |
| Price | Set by SMS providers and carriers, per country | Meta's authentication rate, per country |
| Pumping fraud | A known risk | Not exposed to SMS pumping |
| Reaches people without the app | Yes | No: needs WhatsApp on the number |
Delivery and trust
An SMS code often arrives from a number the customer does not recognise, sometimes late, sometimes filtered. A WhatsApp code arrives in the app the customer already has open, from your business name, in the same chat where they may later get their order updates. That familiarity matters: people hesitate to type a code that came from a stranger.
WhatsApp authentication messages also carry a Copy code button, so the customer copies it with one tap instead of memorising six digits. On your website, add autocomplete="one-time-code" to the code box and accept spaces and Arabic digits, so nothing a customer types is rejected for the wrong reason.
Cost: who charges what
SMS prices depend on the provider and the destination country, and they change. WhatsApp codes are billed by Meta at its authentication rate for the customer's country, charged to your own WhatsApp Business account. Compare the rate for the countries you sell in with the WhatsApp cost calculator rather than trusting a single global number.
With Chatmizer, codes go out from your own number and Chatmizer adds nothing per code: you pay Meta's rate and nothing else for each message.
Fraud: SMS pumping and code guessing
SMS pumping is a fraud where bots request codes to expensive numbers so someone along the chain earns from the traffic, and you pay for it. WhatsApp codes are not paid that way. Whatever channel you choose, protect the send button: limit codes per number per hour, wait before a resend, allow only the countries you serve, and stop a verification after too many wrong tries.
When SMS still makes sense
- Customers without WhatsApp in your market need another way in.
- Strict rules in some industries name SMS as the required channel.
- A fallback, not a default: if the WhatsApp send fails, offer SMS or email on the same screen.
How to switch your codes to WhatsApp
- 1Connect your WhatsApp Business number.
- 2Create an app for your website and leave the code language on Automatic, so each customer gets Arabic or English.
- 3Wait for Meta to approve the code message.
- 4Create an API key and paste the ready snippet (cURL, Node, PHP or Python) into sign-up and login.
- 5Send the code with one call, check it with a second, and show a fallback if sending fails.
The same number can then send order confirmations and reminders with your approved templates; see WhatsApp message templates with examples.
Send verification codes and notifications from your own WhatsApp number.

Frequently asked questions
Is a WhatsApp OTP cheaper than SMS?
Often, but it depends on the country. Meta charges its authentication rate per country; compare it with your SMS provider's price for the same countries.
What happens if the customer has no WhatsApp?
The send fails and your site should offer another way, such as SMS or email, on the same screen.
Can I send WhatsApp codes in Arabic?
Yes. With Automatic language, each customer gets the Arabic or English code message based on your site's language or their phone's country.
