WhatsApp Template Rejected? 9 Reasons and How to Fix Them
WhatsApp template rejected? The real reasons from Meta's review rules: variable mistakes, wrong category, policy issues and duplicates, with the fix for each.

The short answer
A WhatsApp template rejected by Meta usually has one of four causes: a variable mistake (a template that starts or ends with {{1}}, skipped numbers, or too many variables), the wrong category (promotion inside a utility template), a policy issue (asking for card or ID numbers, threats) or a duplicate of an existing template. Fix the cause, add sample values, and resubmit or appeal.
Meta reviews every WhatsApp message template before you can send it, and the decision usually arrives within 24 hours. A rejection email rarely explains much. The reasons below come from Meta's own template review and categorisation rules, checked on 9 October 2026, with the fix for each. You can also paste a template into our free WhatsApp template checker before you submit it.
Why your WhatsApp template was rejected: variables
- 1. It starts or ends with a variable. “{{1}}, your order is ready” is rejected. Write “Hi {{1}}, your order is ready.”
- 2. Variables are not sequential. {{1}}, {{2}}, {{4}} fails. Number them in order with no gaps.
- 3. Wrong brackets or symbols. Use exactly {{1}}. Missing braces, or #, $ or % inside them, are rejected.
- 4. Too many variables for the length. A short message that is mostly variables looks like a blank template. Add real words around them.
Wrong category: the most common reason in 2026
Meta has three categories. Utility follows up on something the customer did or asked for (an order, a booking, an account update) and must contain nothing promotional. Marketing is anything that promotes, re-engages or sells. Authentication is only for one-time passcodes. A template that mixes them, such as an order update with a discount at the end, is marketing.
- 5. Promotion inside a utility template. Remove the offer, or submit it as marketing. Since April 2025, Meta approves such a template as marketing instead of utility.
- 6. Content that is unclear. A template that is only a placeholder, or a generic line such as “Congratulations!”, is treated as marketing.
- 7. A passcode outside authentication. One-time codes may only be sent with authentication templates.
Policy and duplicates
- 8. Policy issues. Asking for full card numbers, bank account numbers or national ID numbers, threats or public shaming, and prices or offers that break WhatsApp's Commerce Policy are rejected. Asking for the last four digits is allowed.
- 9. A duplicate. A template with the same body and footer as one you already have is rejected. Change the wording, or reuse the existing one.
How to fix a rejected WhatsApp template
- 1Open WhatsApp Manager, then Message templates, and read the rejection reason on the template.
- 2Fix the cause above. For a category issue, either remove the promotion or change the category.
- 3Click Add sample and enter realistic example values for every variable.
- 4Submit again, or request a review (appeal). Appeals are decided within 24 hours and must include a sample.
- 5If Meta changed an approved template's category, you have 60 days to request a review in Business Support Home.
Templates that get approved
Approved templates are specific, polite and useful on their own: they say who is writing, why, and what the customer can do next. Our WhatsApp message templates with examples shows ready-to-adapt wording for orders, bookings and reminders, and how WhatsApp Business API pricing works explains why the category also decides what each message costs.

Frequently asked questions
Why was my WhatsApp template rejected?
Most often because of a variable mistake (starting or ending with a variable, skipped numbers), the wrong category (promotion in a utility template), a policy issue, or a duplicate of an existing template.
How long does WhatsApp template approval take?
Meta says decisions can take up to 24 hours, and appeals are also decided within 24 hours.
Can I appeal a rejected WhatsApp template?
Yes. Edit it in WhatsApp Manager, add sample values for each variable and submit, or request a review. Category changes can be reviewed within 60 days.
Why did my utility template become marketing?
Meta judged it promotional. Since April 2025, a utility template with marketing content is approved as marketing, which also changes its price.
