Follow-ups after 24 hours: WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and TikTok
Why a late follow-up step may need a WhatsApp template, and how to add one without leaving the step.
4 min read
WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger let a business send free messages for 24 hours after the customer's last message; TikTok for 48. Follow-ups usually wait days, so a late step can land after that window. Chatmizer checks the window at the moment each step is due.
- Inside the window, on any app: the step's text is sent.
- WhatsApp after 24 hours: the step's approved template is sent instead (Meta charges for it). Without one, the step is skipped and the chat shows a note saying why.
- Instagram and Messenger after 24 hours, TikTok after 48: nothing can reach the customer, so the step is skipped with a note.
- Telegram, X and Reddit: no window — steps send when due.
Add a WhatsApp template to a step
- 1Open the follow-up. Each message step shows what will happen on each app at that point.
- 2Open “WhatsApp after 24 hours” on the step.
- 3Pick an approved template, or press “Send this message to Meta as a template” to submit the step's own text. Meta usually reviews it within minutes.
- 4If the template has {{1}}-style values, choose what fills each one: the contact's first name, full name or fixed text. Save.
