How to Find a Product From a Photo Your Customer Sends
Customers often show you what they want instead of naming it. How to find a product from a photo fast, and how AI can recognise your own catalogue.

The short answer
To find a product from a photo a customer sends with “do you have this?”, match it against your own product photos, answer with the product name, price and your photo if it is yours, and ask a clarifying question if you are not sure. An AI agent that has learned your catalogue can do this in seconds — but it should only name a product when it is confident, and never claim stock it cannot see.
Customers do not know your product codes. They know what they saw: a story, a post, something a friend wore. So they send the picture. For a busy shop, each of those photos is a small detective job — and a slow answer loses the sale.
The kinds of photos you get
- A screenshot of your own post or story — the easiest case, if you can find the post.
- A photo of your product in real life — on a person, in a home, in bad light.
- A photo of a similar product from somewhere else — “do you have something like this?”.
- A photo of a problem — a damaged parcel, the wrong item. That is not a sales question at all.
How to answer each one
- 1Your own product: name it, give the price and the options, and send your own clean photo so they can confirm.
- 2Not sure it's yours: say so, and ask for the product name or a clearer picture. A wrong guess is worse than a question.
- 3Similar, not the same: say you don't have that exact one and offer the closest products you do have — honestly.
- 4A problem photo: apologise and pass it to a person immediately. Damage and wrong items are urgent.
How AI finds your product from a photo
An AI agent can learn what your products look like from your own material: the product pages on your website (each product's photo, name and price) and any catalogues or price lists you upload. When a customer sends a photo, it compares it with your products side by side and answers only when it is confident it is the same item.
- Keep your website current — that is where it learns prices and photos. Re-read it after you change prices.
- Products known only from a PDF may be known by name and description without a photo; the agent should say so rather than sending a different picture.
- Availability comes from your data, never from the photo. If stock is not in your information, it should not promise any.
This is one part of selling in chat; the bigger picture is in our conversational commerce guide, and the price side in “price in DM”.
Chatmizer's AI agent learns your products from your website, recognises them in customers' photos and screenshots, and replies with the name, price and your own photo.
Chatmizer for online storesFrequently asked questions
Can AI recognise a product from someone else's photo?
Often, yes — if the product is clearly visible and the agent knows your catalogue. When it is not sure, it should ask instead of guessing.
What if the customer sends a photo of a competitor's product?
Be honest: say you do not have that exact item and suggest the closest ones you do sell.
Does reading photos cost extra?
Reading an image is more work than reading text, so AI platforms usually count it against a reading or media allowance. Check how your plan counts it.
