The short answer
WhatsApp commerce (or WhatsApp ecommerce) means customers browse, order and pay through a WhatsApp conversation instead of a separate website checkout. Businesses do it in four ways: a catalog in the WhatsApp Business app, a link out to a website store, a store page that opens inside the chat with the order tied to the conversation, or ordering through a chatbot.
In Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf, "order on WhatsApp" is printed on shop windows, Instagram bios and delivery bags. For many small businesses WhatsApp commerce is not a side channel next to the online store; it is the store. What changes from one business to the next is how much of the order happens inside the chat, and how much is typed out by hand.
What WhatsApp commerce means
WhatsApp commerce is a form of conversational commerce: the sale runs through a conversation rather than a shopping cart on a website. The customer asks a question, sees the products, places the order and gets every update in the same WhatsApp chat they started in. The broader idea, across Instagram and Messenger too, is covered in our conversational commerce guide. This article is about WhatsApp specifically: the models, the platform rules and the payments.
The four models of WhatsApp commerce
| Model | How it works | Good at | Where it breaks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Catalog in the WhatsApp Business app | Products with photos and prices in your WhatsApp profile; customers send items or a cart to you in the chat | Free, quick to start, nothing to learn | You still type the total, the address and every update by hand, from one phone |
| Link out to a website store | You send a link to a Shopify or WooCommerce shop and the customer checks out there | Large catalogs, card payments, a full website | The customer leaves the chat, and the order lives in a system that doesn't know the conversation |
| A store that opens inside the chat | A mobile store page opens inside WhatsApp; the order is tied back to that conversation and updates arrive there | Real checkout without losing the chat: totals, payments and statuses are automatic | Needs a tool connected to the WhatsApp Business Platform (the API) |
| Chatbot ordering | Menus, buttons or an AI agent take the order message by message | Short menus and repeat orders, like a restaurant or a refill | Long catalogs with photos, sizes and add-ons are slow to pick in chat bubbles |
Most businesses combine them: a chatbot or AI agent answers questions, and sends a store link when the customer is ready to choose. The 24-hour window and message templates
- A customer message opens a 24-hour customer service window. Inside it, a business on the WhatsApp Business Platform can reply with any message: text, images, buttons, links.
- Outside the window, only approved templates. To message a customer who hasn't written in the last 24 hours, the business must use a message template that Meta has reviewed and approved.
- Templates have categories. Order and delivery updates are utility templates; offers and promotions are marketing templates, and Meta prices and reviews them differently.
- Marketing needs permission. Send promotions only to customers who agreed to receive them, or your number's quality rating drops.
How customers pay in WhatsApp commerce
| Method | How it works | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Cash on delivery | The customer pays the courier | Unconfirmed orders and refused deliveries; confirm before you ship |
| Bank transfer, mobile wallets, InstaPay | The customer transfers and sends a screenshot | Someone must check each screenshot against the account before the order counts as paid |
| Payment links and QR codes | You send your own link or QR from your bank or provider | Matching each payment to the right order |
| Card gateways | Stripe, Paymob, PayPal and others take the card on their own page | The order should be marked paid only when the gateway confirms the exact amount |
| Payments inside WhatsApp | WhatsApp's own in-chat payments | Available only in a few countries, such as India and Brazil |
Whatever you accept, keep one rule: an order is paid when the money is confirmed, never because a customer says so. Cash on delivery has its own playbook in COD order confirmation on WhatsApp.
What to look for in a WhatsApp commerce tool
- The official WhatsApp Business Platform, so your number is not at risk from unofficial automation.
- The order tied to the conversation, so the receipt and every status update go back to the same chat.
- Money paid to your own accounts, with no commission on your sales.
- Payment checks you can trust: gateway confirmation for cards, a screenshot review step for transfers.
- Respect for the 24-hour window, with templates for the messages that come later.
- Arabic that reads right-to-left in the store and the chat, if you sell in the region.
- A way to reach a person: a team inbox, and a clean handoff from automatic replies to your staff.
- An order board your team works from, and a way to export your data.
How Chatmizer's WhatsApp Store does WhatsApp commerce
Chatmizer's WhatsApp Store is the third model, built so the chat never ends. You connect your WhatsApp number, build a mobile store with your logo, cover, colours and categories, and attach the store to the number. From then on, every customer who messages gets a native welcome card with an Open the store button, then a menu: Shop, My orders, Talk to us and a language button. There is no flow to build.
- The store opens inside WhatsApp, in English or Arabic (right-to-left), with photos, sizes, colours, add-ons and search.
- Checkout fits how people buy: delivery, pickup or digital, delivery time slots, discount codes, and the customer's WhatsApp number filled in for them. Returning customers see Welcome back and can order again in one tap.
- Payments go straight to you: cash on delivery, transfers and wallets with a payment screenshot your team checks, or cards through your own Stripe, Paymob or PayPal account. No commission, and Chatmizer never holds the money.
- The order stays in the chat: a receipt card with a View invoice button, then confirmed, packing, delivered or cancelled updates, and a star rating after delivery.
- Your team runs it from one board: New, Confirmed, On the way and Done, with autopilot, insights and the shared inbox. Talk to us hands the chat to a person; the customer types bot to get the automatic replies back.
See how the WhatsApp Store opens inside the chat, takes payment to your own account and sends every update back to the same conversation.
See the WhatsApp StoreIs WhatsApp commerce right for your business?
It fits best when your customers already message you before they buy: fashion, food, beauty, electronics, gifts and services across Egypt and the Gulf. If you sell thousands of products to buyers who never chat, a website store stays your main shop, and WhatsApp becomes the place for questions and updates. If most of your sales start with "how much?" in a chat, follow the steps in how to create a WhatsApp store.
Frequently asked questions
Is WhatsApp commerce the same as conversational commerce?
It is one part of it. Conversational commerce is selling through any chat, such as WhatsApp, Instagram or Messenger. WhatsApp commerce is the same idea on WhatsApp, with WhatsApp's own rules: the 24-hour window and approved templates.
Do I need the WhatsApp Business API for WhatsApp commerce?
Not for the basics: the free WhatsApp Business app has a catalog. For automatic replies, a team working one number, and a store that sends receipts and updates by itself, you need the WhatsApp Business Platform (the API), usually through a provider.
Can customers pay inside WhatsApp?
WhatsApp's own in-chat payments exist only in a few countries, such as India and Brazil. Elsewhere, businesses use cash on delivery, transfers and wallets, payment links, or a card gateway page opened from the chat.
Can I message a customer about their order after 24 hours?
Only with a message template that Meta has approved. Inside the 24 hours after the customer's last message you can send any reply; after that, order updates need an approved utility template.
Does Chatmizer take a commission on WhatsApp Store sales?
No. Payments go from your customer to your own accounts and gateways, and Chatmizer never holds the money. Your gateway charges its usual fees; WhatsApp Store itself is part of your Chatmizer plan, shown on the pricing page.
