The short answer

For COD order confirmation on WhatsApp, connect your store's “order created” webhook to a WhatsApp automation that sends an approved template with two buttons — Confirm and Cancel — to the customer's number. Their tap is recorded on the order, a reply is sent back, and your store can be told the answer so unconfirmed orders are never shipped.

If you sell with cash on delivery, you already know the cost of an order nobody meant to place: the courier drives out, the customer is not there or says they never ordered, and you pay for the trip both ways. A quick confirmation before you ship removes most of that pain — and WhatsApp is where your customers will actually see it.

Why confirm on WhatsApp instead of calling

  • A call needs someone free at the same moment as the customer; a WhatsApp message waits until they look.
  • One tap on a button is easier than a conversation, so more people answer.
  • The answer is written down: confirmed, cancelled or no reply — no one has to remember a phone call.
  • It works the same for ten orders a day or a thousand.

What you need before you start

  • A WhatsApp Business number connected through the official WhatsApp Business Platform (not the WhatsApp Business app on a phone).
  • An approved template with two quick-reply buttons, such as “Confirm order” and “Cancel order”. Use the Utility category: order messages are usually Utility, which Meta charges less for, and Meta may pause Marketing templates used for transactions.
  • A store that can send a webhook when an order is created — Shopify and WooCommerce both can, and anything else can through Zapier or Make.

Setting up COD order confirmation, step by step

  1. 1Create the automation and choose “Cash-on-delivery confirmation”, then pick which store sends the orders (Shopify, WooCommerce, or Other for Zapier and Make).
  2. 2Map the fields: where the customer's phone is in the order, the order number, and a default country code for numbers typed without one (20 for Egypt, 966 for Saudi Arabia, 971 for the UAE).
  3. 3Choose the template and fill its variables from order fields — the customer's name, the order number, the total.
  4. 4Say what happens on each answer: which button means confirm, an optional thank-you reply, and a tag on the contact (for example “COD confirmed”).
  5. 5Connect your store: copy the automation's private link into Shopify (Settings → Notifications → Webhooks → Order creation) or WooCommerce (Settings → Advanced → Webhooks → Order created).
  6. 6Send a test to your own number with sample values before turning it on.

What happens when the customer answers

A tap on Confirm or Cancel is recorded against that order and the contact is tagged. Typed answers count too — a simple “yes” (in English or Arabic) works like the button. Anything else, such as “can I change the address?”, is not swallowed: it goes to your inbox or your AI agent as a normal message, so a real question still gets a real answer.

If you add a callback URL, your store is told the answer within seconds (signed, so it can trust it), which lets you hold or cancel the order automatically instead of checking by hand.

Good practice that keeps your number healthy

  • Send the confirmation right after the order, not hours later — people answer while they still remember ordering.
  • Keep the message short: what was ordered, the total, the two buttons.
  • Use a separate status update automation for “shipped” and “out for delivery” instead of mixing them into the confirmation.
  • Do not resend to people who did not answer more than once; follow up by hand for high-value orders instead.

Chatmizer's WhatsApp order automations work with Shopify, WooCommerce, Zapier and Make, and send the answer back to your store.

Frequently asked questions

Does Meta charge for confirmation messages?

Yes. They are template messages billed by Meta to your WhatsApp Business account, usually at the Utility rate. See our guide to WhatsApp Business API pricing.

Can I confirm only cash-on-delivery orders, not paid ones?

Shopify's order webhook fires for every order. To confirm only cash-on-delivery orders, send it through a filter step in Zapier or Make first, or set your store's own rules to call the link only for COD.

What if the customer never answers?

The order stays marked as waiting, so your team can see which orders have no confirmation and decide whether to call or hold them.

Will the customer's other questions be lost?

No. Only a clear Confirm or Cancel is treated as the answer. Any other message reaches your inbox — and your AI agent if one answers that channel.
